It wasn't always easy

We are still a relatively young company, but WallPen® has already experienced a lot… Grab a coffee and enjoy our adventurous logbook.

January 2015

The basic idea

For more than 25 years Andreas Schmidt was managing director and employer in the field of training, presentation and sales of 3D CAM/CAM software, mainly in the German automotive, aviation and mechanical engineering industries. He had the idea to start a company selling Chinese wall printers on the German market.

He orders his first printer.

February 2015

Shattered dreams

The Chinese printer bursts into flames (without nonsense!) the first time Andreas tries to print with it. Money gone! The Chinese manufacturer was no longer available.

It seems as if dreams would go up in smoke.

April 2015

“I’ll build it myself!”

Second try: A printer from another Chinese company arrives. The eight year-old heavily used laptop is full of pirated copies. What’s more, the functions are restricted, the print reliability is low, and multiple malfunctions interfere with stable.

Andreas decides to build his own printer.

August 2015

Initial schematic diagrams

Initial schematic drawings for the printer are created as the search for high-quality components and reliable suppliers begins. The printing technology and motors are also taking a more concrete shape. The many years of experience in planning and construction is of course of great benefit to the project.

September 2015

90 % “Made in Germany”

The first suppliers in Germany are found. The WallPen will only be purchasing laser technology, printer heads, and ink from leading companies abroad. A first employee developed an initial software program for the printer, although it has yet to product successful results.

February 2016

15 patents registered

Solutions for every faced difficulty over the last few months where found – many of them new and unexpected. WallPen GmbH registered a total of 15 patents with the help of a leading German patent attorney.

April 2016

Setback followed by a stroke of luck

The Southern European programmer ended his months of work by heading home for Easter vacation, after which he did not return to Germany. There was a good reason for this: His program didn’t work. After a first shock, Andreas considered this a stroke of luck: Programmer Ramazan Köprülü got in contact with him, became his first serious employee, and ultimately created software that could provide quality printing results. Today his code is the backbone of the WallPen.

May 2016

No ink flow

The first test print starts. The printer is running and moving over the surface – but no ink is flowing. Searching for a solution to the problem, Jochen joined the team. He turned the right screw and helped create the first successful print.

June 2016

It works!

The first successful wall print has decorated an old wall chart with a knight in black and white. The printer is working exactly like it should! The staff is in a state of cautious euphoria.

July – September 2016

Contacts from initial customers

Things are moving at a rapid pace. The news spread through forums and by word of mouth: now there’s a German wall printer. While Niklas writes the app for the tablet used to operate the printer, Andreas is already receiving phone calls from all over the world. The first interested customers are already sending in binding orders.

November 2016

Delivery starts soon

Deadlines for our initial deliveries are drawing closer. The app is being updated once again. The team receives contacts from several agencies, and first distribution partners are under contract. The days seem much too short to handle all the things which still need to be completed before the market launch.

December 2016

A perfect exterior

Construction of the first five WallPen E1s is complete, and all components have been assembled. The final tests before completion are starting. The first customers will be receiving training in February. A marketing concept is being developed, and implementation of marketing measures has begun.

January 2017

Critical completion phase

The final phase before completion is always the most exciting. Small optimizations and setting changes are made after daily practical tests. Everyone on the team is exhilarated – it’s a little bit like the days before a birth.

February 2017

Market launch

Customers have been trained, the bags are sewn and printed, and the printer’s been thoroughly tested. In two weeks, the first models of the Wallpen E1 will be making their way into the world. The WallPen is already receiving attention in the press: Angela Göbler from the IHK Journal visited the company’s headquarters in Wissen.

October 2018

E1plus – Next Generation Wall Printer

After such a successful start with the E1, the next generation of the WallPen is introduced after 1.5 years: The “E1plus” is not only visually redesigned, but is also technically a new class due to a complete revision of the vertical axis system. Since our existing customers are important to us, we offer them the upgrade from E1 to E1plus at cost price.

September 2019
